Congress slams axis proposal

By Our Correspondent

NEW DELHI, May 11: India’s main opposition Congress party has warned Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s government against any military axis with Israel and the United States, news reports said on Sunday.

Vajpayee’s National Security Adviser Brajesh Mishra had proposed in Washington that an India-US-Israel alliance “would have the political will and moral authority to take bold decisions in extreme cases of terrorist provocation.”

Congress spokesman Jaipal Reddy however warned against the move, saying the Congress would oppose it even if it meant disrupting India’s traditional consensus on foreign policy among its main parties.

“We are surprised to note that Mr Brajesh Mishra pleaded for a strategic triad... We are unable to understand as to how Israel has come into the picture,” Mr Reddy said.
