Punters demonstrate after third race in Lahore
LAHORE, May 11: Punters staged a demonstration after the third race in which both the joint favourites and another backed for place failed to oblige them during the Lahore Gymkhana Meeting at the Racecourse on Sunday.
The joint favourites All At Sea and Gold Ribbon in a dismal performance ran off the board and Imagine Iff backed for place hardly edged on the frame. The race was won by long shot chestnut mare Dancing Margina.
Soon after the race a section of the crowd, who suspected some foul play, started demonstrating in front of Lahore Race Club (LRC) stewards box demanding cancellation of the race. They raised slogans in favour of their demand expressing their resentment.
An inquiry was ordered by the stewards in the running of All At Sea owned by Munir Dar and Gold Ribbon, who ran in the colours of Rashid Beg, an ex-riding boy. The demonstrators dispersed peacefully as soon as the “all clear” bell sounded.
An The stewards gave a stern warning to riding boy A. Aziz, who won the sixth race partnering Eastern Bird for not keeping straight course on his mount. Three to one chance Eastern Bird beat fancied Kargil Tiger (Shahid Rehman up) by a short-head in photo-finish. Later Shahid Rehman lodged an objection against the winner for pressing.
The objection was over-ruled by the stewards.
Riding boy M. Zeeshan gave a dazzling display of horsemanship when he rode home three winners. He started the day on a triumphant note in the opener coasting home long shot Fifty Six Fifty Six. He then piloted home Prince Of Peace in the fourth race ending the day in a blaze of glory squeezing in Royal Falcon to beat fancied Fair Play in the feature and last event of the day. Jockey Shahid Rehman brought in a brace of winners through Fancied Disney Land and 40 to 100 favourite Speed Gun in the second and fifth race, respectively.
