Mazhar shines in saddle with brace of winners

By Ian Fyfe

KARACHI, May 11: Former champion jockey M. Mazhar stole the riding honours, when he piloted home a brace of winners at the Summer Gymkhana Meeting, held on Sunday afternoon at the Karachi Racecourse.

Partnering Royal Widsom in the opening race, Mazhar used his experience to the fullest, when he held off the constant interference of riding boy Naveed astride Royal Promise to win the race by four lengths. Mrs. Yasmin Khan’s Dauntless was third with Millennium Era completing the frame.

Not to be undone, Mazhar took centre stage once again in the following event, riding Eye Catcher to her second victory in a row, after coming in with a terrific burst to collar Rukhsar and Mera Sulman a furlong from the winning post.

Rahat Sultan’s much talked about seven-year-old bay horse Khas Ul Khas won the next race by one and half lengths from Canon Again.

With jockey Imamdin with the reins, Khas Ul Khas took over the running while approaching the bend and increasing his strides in the home stretch, went on to win the race by one and half lengths from Canon Again, with Ustadon Ka Ustad, this time ridden by M. Yousuf grabbing the third slot from Trust Again.

Auzy displaying another pleasant performance with veteran rider Nadir Abdullah once again in the saddle, beat Jaguar by three lengths, after the two were engaged in a keen tussle while sprinting for home.

Arch rival Tipu Fight was once again on the receiving end, finishing a very poor third a further half length away, with Mark completing the frame.

The honours of the fifth race belonged to leading owner and horse breeder Faisal Farooq, whose thoroughbred bay horse Neelam Taab splendidly ridden by M. Yousuf, stole the limelight from Sapno Ki Rani by half a length, after the two were engaged in a neck and neck duel a furlong from the winning post.

Nehal Pervaiz’s dark bay horse Rajwar managed to hold off Bull Dancer, to grab the third spot.

After Shah Khan was withdrawn from the sixth race due to illness, there seemed to be no challenger worthy enough to take on Ashraf Kohtari’s chestnut Strike The Gold.

But Shoukat Awan’s bay filly Shama took up the challenge and with stable jockey M. Nasir in the spotlight, almost picked up the spoils in this five furlong journey, leading the field for most part of race finally surrendering the race by half a length, with Royal Lancer edging out stable companion Ever Shine for a place position.

Owner-trainer Yaqoob Butt’s blue roan Order Of The Day, with Aamir Ali astride, won the last race on the programme in a start to finish bid, holding off the belated challenge of Captain Crash who could have won the race, had jockey M. Barani showed a little more urgency in the saddle.
