KARACHI: Al Qaeda suspects in rangers’ custody

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, May 11: Rangers claimed on Sunday that they had in custody two alleged terrorists of Al Qaeda, who had been picked up near Sabzi Mandi on Super Highway a week back.

The suspects, Habibullah alias Imran and Mohammad Anver alias Jabir, booked for possessing illegal weapons and explosives, had been produced before two judicial magistrates on Friday by the police after completion of their seven-day police remand given by the courts on May 3. The courts concerned gave them into police custody for another four days.

However, the rangers claimed that they had been investigating the suspects, who were in their custody.

In a press statement issued on Sunday, a spokesman for the rangers said Habibullah and Mohammad Anver were picked up near Sabzi Mandi on their suspicious activities and illegal weapons and ammunition seized from them.

He said that during the initial investigation, the rangers on the suspects’ lead raided different places and seized illegal weapons and explosives. He claimed that accessories used in detonating explosives were also seized on the lead provided by them. He claimed that the explosives were of a superior quality.

The spokesman quoted the suspects as saying that the weapons and explosives were to be used to create terror.
