KARACHI: Governor seeks removal of gambling dens

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, May 11: Sindh governor Dr Ishratul Ibad on Saturday directed the police officials to take a drastic action against those who are operating gambling dens and illegal mini-cinema houses, screening pornographic movies at various places in the city.

Deploring the presence of such dens, he said if the police fail to take a stern action against those involved, it would be a matter of shame.

Presiding over a high-level meeting at the governor’s house, he expressed concern over increasing traffic accidents.

The governor asked the city Nazim and traffic police to put a ban on the movement of heavy traffic and tankers during school-timings so that precious human lives could be saved.

He said he had been receiving comp-laints against the traffic police, and directed them to improve their performance by ensuring strict implementation of traffic laws.

He said though the crime rate had declined in the city, there was still a need to further improve the law and order situation, because it was the responsibility of the police to establish the writ of the law.

The governor also asked the police to ensure that the ordinances on Bhatta and Reti-Bajri are strictly implemented.

He said he visited various police stations recently and was shocked to see the poor sanitary conditions in and around the police stations and policemen wearing untidy uniforms.

He asked the police that “when you are not keeping even the boundary walls of the police stations clean, how would a complainant visit a police station where garbage is seen littered.

“I even observed lack of vigour and zeal in the police personnel and even up to SHO level,” the governor said, adding, “no-doubt the policemen are low-paid employees, still their job demanded full attention and they must be proud of being police officers and thus they should be in a proper dress and be courteous to citizens.”

He also urged the town police officers to identify the civic problems and cooperate with the town administrations in the removal of encroachments.

The meeting was attended, among others, by the provincial ministers, secretaries, city Nazim Naimatullah Khan, IGP Asad Ashraf Malik, DIG (Operations) Tariq Jamil, DIG (Traffic and Highways) Mohammad Yamin Khan, DIG (Investigations) Fayyaz Leghari, DIG Karachi, DIG (Traffic), advisors to Sindh chief ministers Noman Sehgal and Salahuddin Haider and provincial secre-tary information Mehtab Akbar Rashdi and others.
