US frees 13 PoWs

WASHINGTON, May 9: Thirteen prisoners from the war in Afghanistan were flown out of a US navy base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, on Thursday after being cleared for release by US authorities, defence officials said here.

“A number of detainees have departed Guantanamo Bay,” said Lt Commander Jeff Davis, a Pentagon spokesman.

A defence official said the transfer involved 13 detainees who will be turned over to Afghan authorities and then released.—AFP
