BIRMINGHAM (England), May 6: Zimbabwe got their tour of England off to a winning start when they beat British Universities by 10 wickets at Edgbaston here on Monday.
Needing just 37 to win on the third day of a scheduled four, openers Mark Vermeulen and Dion Ebrahim reached the target in a mere 3.4 overs with Vermeulen’s unbeaten 28 coming from just a dozen deliveries.
Heath Streak’s men might well have enjoyed an innings victory had it not been for former Australia Under-19 batsman Ed Cowan’s 137 not out.
Cowan’s runs came in good time, off 148 balls and included three sixes and 20 fours.
But opening bowler Andy Blignaut (four for 89) and experienced quick Streak (three for 33) ensured Cowan received precious little support.
It was a good all-round performance from Streak who earlier made 51 as Zimbabwe made 376 to secure a commanding first innings lead of 230.
Grant Flower, Zimbabwe’s most experienced batsman, who was 113 not out overnight, added a further 17 runs before he was caught behind.
Blignaut then showed the kind of typically aggressive batting form the Africans will require against tougher opponents in a 33-ball 34.
Zimbabwe’s next match sees them up against a county side for the first time on this trip when they face Worcestershire in a four-day encounter at New Road, starting on Friday.
They then have another four-day game, against Sussex at Hove, before going to Lord’s on May 22 for the first Test of two against England.
