Differences arise over team selection

By Our Sports Correspondent

LAHORE, May 5: The national selection committee and team management have taken a different stance on the changes made in the Pakistan squad, which left for Colombo on Sunday night to participate in the three-nation tournament.

Skipper Rashid Latif said in Karachi before the team departed that the selectors showed inconsistency by ousting four players from the squad which clinched Sharjah Cup last month.

When chief selector Aamir Sohail was asked to comment he claimed that the team was announced with the consent of the captain.

It seemed the situation developed due to poor communication between the different wings of the PCB, or the higher authorities of the board had failed to clear the duties of every one.

When asked to comment, the PCB chairman Lt Gen Tauqir Zia said: “Selection committee is the final authority to select the team and it is the authority of the captain and coach to select the final 11 for a match and it is a division which should be clear to all.”

He said that his stance on this issue was very much clear and it was upto the others how they take it.

Four players picked for the Sharjah Cup namely Misbah-ul-Haq, Naved Latif, Mohammad Zahid and Rana Naveed-ul-Hasan were axed without getting proper opportunities in the tournament. They were replaced by uncapped batsmen Faisal Athar, Yasir Hameed and two discarded pacers Shoaib Akhtar and Shabbir Ahmed.
