RAWALPINDI, May 5: Four people, including a couple and a minor girl, died and five injured in three different traffic accidents in Islamabad and Rawalpindi on Monday, police said.
Police said Zahid Hussain, a resident of F-7/3, along with his 26-year-old wife, Ghazala Tabbasum, two sisters and two other relatives, was coming back from the airport after seeing off his mother when his car (IDC-1391) rammed into a truck on the Islamabad Highway.
Zahid, who was driving the vehicle, apparently lost control over the steering. His sisters, Neelam, wife of Basharat, and Urooj, wife of Tahir Hussain, and two other relatives, Fatima Shaukat and Mehrun Nisa, who all were sitting on the back seat, were critically injured.
The passersby pulled out the injured trapped in the wreckage of the car and shifted them to hospital.
The couple, who leaves behind an 18-month old baby, succumbed to their injuries after reaching the hospital at about 2.30pm.
The injured were stated to be in a serious condition at Pims. Zahid’s parents have been living in the UK. His mother received the news of the accident in Dubai during her transit stay there, his family said.
The truck driver, identified as Mohammad Ishaq, was taken into custody by the Secretariat police.
GIRL RUN OVER: A minor girl was run over by a pickup van in Sadiqabad on Monday.
Police said four-year-old Saba Gul was crossing the road when she was hit by the vehicle. She was taken to the Rawalpindi General Hospital where she died.
Police said the girl’s parents had forgiven the pickup driver.
In another accident, one person was killed and another injured in the 1-9 area.
Police said Ahmed Hayat was travelling with his friend on a motorcycle (LXR-9137) when a recklessly-driven car hit the bike near New Katarian. Hayat died on the spot while his friend sustained critical injuries. The car driver escaped.
