Power shutdown continues

SUKKUR, May 5: Half the city — and students of secondary schools — endured a 14-hour-long power breakdown, present season’s longest yet, as the power to almost the entire city was cut off between 3pm on Saturday till 5am on Sunday.

Students of class IX and X were unable to study in the night time and had to appear unprepared and fatigued after a whole night of sleeping restlessly at best.

The daytime was spent in a sweltering heat as mercury touched 43 degrees Celsius while at night, the people had to endure mosquitoes and other pests without the comfort of running fans.

The power breakdown also affected water supply to most of the residential areas.

Hesco officials, when contacted by this correspondent, while confirming the power breakdown in half the city, said that a major fault had developed in the Sukkur city grid station.

They said that a cable in the grid station had been burnt, which took 14 hours of hectic efforts to replace.

teachers: At least 100 teachers on Monday took out a rally in Thull town to protest against officials of the treasury department in Jacobabad.

Most of the protesting teachers belonged to the Primary Teachers Association, Government School Teachers Association and Majid School Teachers Association.

Protesters later assembled in front of the Thull press club.

On the occasion, leaders of various organisations accused officials of the treasury department of raising unnecessary objections, saying hundreds of their bills had not been cleared.

They called upon the Sindh government to take notice of the situation and take action in this regard.
