Kargil Tiger outpaces rivals to win May Cup

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, May 4: Fancied bay horse Kargil Tiger proved his class when he outpaced his thirteen rivals to win the May Cup run over 1400m during the Lahore Gymkhana Meeting at the Racecourse on Sunday.

Backed at even-money favourite and piloted by jockey Shahid Rehman, Kargil Tiger came leaping from the last to first to claim the cup in a fantastic performance.

He beat the roan-horse My Home Land comfortably by over two lengths. Sun Of Gold finished third another three lengths behind while Morning Noor completed the board. In all, 14 ran for the event.

English filly Aegean Daisy won the supporting event, running at her own pace under the striding of-jockey Salah-ud-Din II.

Backed at restrictive odds of 20 to 100 Aegean Daisy lived up to her status of favouritism registering an easy win and giving no anxious moments to her backers.

She beat Key Guy Princess by about a distance. Sound of Music and Perfect Timing completed the frame among nine runners left after the last-minute withdrawal of Shannel.

Grey colt Speed Gun was undoubtedly the best performer of the day. He registered a pillar-to-post success in the fifth race. Speed Gun, who loves to make pace, set out to make all the running and though both Prince Of Peace and Mohni Road threw down token challenges he was comfortably home beating the former by over eight lengths.

Jockey Shahid Rehman was seen at his strongest when he blazed a trail of victories giving yet another display of his riding skill. He came home punching Speed Gun to land the spoils in the fifth race. He then extricated Kargil Tiger from the last bunch to pinch the May Cup. He went on to complete his treble through a run away success on Canwara in the eighth race. He rode all the three mounts flawlessly.

Riding boy Khalil Vicky also scored a double through Jashn and All At Sea in the second and third race, respectively.

Munir Dar once again had a good day seeing his two horses occupying winner’ s boxes in third and fifth race, respectively.

The stewards suspended riding boy Javed Bashir for 15 days and also fined rupees 5000 for not riding on merit All At Sea in his previous outing when the brown filly ran off the frame. She won convincingly under another rider. They also suspended riding boy Shahzad Ahmad for 15 days and also fined rupees 5000 on the same count on Kargil Tiger. Kargil Tiger ran off the frame in his previous outing under Shahzad while he won easily under a different rider on Sunday.
