KARACHI, May 4: Jugni, the impressive thoroughbred chestnut filly owned by M.R. Hussain, stole the limelight once again, by sprinting to a hat trick of victories at the Summer Gymkhana Meeting held on Sunday afternoon at the Karachi Racecourse.
Having the services of Tariq Mehmood once again in the saddle, the filly contesting in the last event on the programme, jumped out second behind Donatello when the five furlong sprint began, but was soon in the lead with Bold Commander closing in from the outside.
However turning for home, Bold Commander went a trifle wide and Jugni still in the lead began to pick up speed in the straight.
With the crowd cheering on the horse and rider to the echo, Jugni passed the winning post ahead of Bold Commander and Donatello with the last two named runners finishing the race in a photo-finish.
This victory enabled Tariq and trainer M. Pervaiz to complete a fine double. Earlier in the fifth race, Tariq piloted Mohammad Ali Khan’s four-year-old bay colt Shah Khan to his fourth successive victory, chased all the way past the winning post by Maha Sagar, Sonia and Robalto Carloes Fan.
The connections after having Robalto Carloes Fan backed for a song for a place position, cheated the racing fans by later trying their other runner Sonia, backed down from lucrative odds.
When the race began Robalto Carloes Fan was seen trailing the field and only made an attempt to move faster while turning for home, to finish a miserable fourth behind Sonia. The Stewards fined the rider Nadim Akhtar astride Robalto Carloes Fan only Rs.10,000 and banned the entry of the horse for one month. Peanuts indeed, considering that Nadim Akhtar committed a very serious crime.
In the opener, Eye Catcher presented veteran rider M. Mazhar with a winner.
As predicted in our column, Ustadon Ka Ustad hacked the rest of the field in the next event with jockey Arshad in the saddle.
Arshad too had a field day on Sunday with a brace of winners, when he rode a splendid race on Defence Academy in the seventh event, holding off the keen challenge from High Standard, with the raging favourite Mickey Mikado II, finishing a disappointing third. Arshad had earlier ridden Ustadon Ka Ustad in the second race.
Auzy after his last two disappointing starts made amends for his followers, winning the third race from Tipu Fight in a start to finish bid. Ironically, jockey Nadir Abdullah who rode the winner registered a much cherished success in the saddle after nearly four and half years.
The bay horse Bull Dancer never let is band of followers down, winning the fourth event with young Tariq Baran astride.
The honours in the sixth event went to Ashraf Kothari’s bay colt Keen Winner ridden by Muzaffar Hussain, beating stable companion Strike The Gold by two lengths.
The racing columns of Dawn were on top once again with six winners in the eight race programme. After Eye Catcher won the opening event, Dawn’s first winner came in the next event when Ustadon Ka Ustad hacked the rest of the field. This success followed up with Auzy in the third, Bull Dancer in the fourth, Shah Khan in the fifth, Keen Winner in the sixth and Jugni, our day’s best.
