HYDERABAD: Revival of sick, closed units demanded

By Our Correspondent

HYDERABAD, May 1: The district council on Wednesday demanded of the Sindh government to ensure the revival of closed and sick industrial units in order to bring to an end joblessness in the province.

The session took up the resolution of Qazi Abdul Qadeer, who claimed that as per reports around 150 industrial units had been closed due to non-cooperation of government officials with the employers.

He added that thousands of people were rendered jobless.

He contended that in the 1950s, Hyderabad had started progressing like an industrial city, but due to lack of incentives for the industries in comparison to other cities of the country these 150 units were closed.

He deplored that the government had not taken any initiative to revive sick industrial units, leading to their closure and shifting of industries to Punjab.

Babu Ramzan Arain argued that industries from the biggest industrial estate of Nooriabad were shifted to Faisalabad and Lahore, and added that the Small Business Finance Corporation also denied finances to small traders in Sindh.

Yousuf Qureshi observed even Gadoonamazai was developing at a rapid pace and called for establishing an Export Processing Zone in Hyderabad.

He urged MPAs of the Sindh Assembly to pressurize the chief minister, Sindh, for ensuring restoration of closed industrial units because agriculture and industries were compulsory for our economic progress.

He said that Hyderabad used to be the No3 city of the country, which had witnessed an industrial revolution during the government of Ayub Khan.

taluka council: Hyderabad Taluka Council convener Abdul Qadeer Naghar has urged members to attend sessions of the council and ensure the implementation of adopted resolutions, reports our bureau.

Presiding over the monthly meeting of the council here on Wednesday, he expressed concern over the casual attitude of the members.

He reminded the members that they were elected representatives of the people and the council was bound to work for the welfare of the people and resolve their problems.

He regretted that the council’s session had to be adjourned just after 45 minutes due to the lack of interest of the members.

Mr Naghar said proceedings of the council would continue for up to three hours in the future and called upon the members to take part in the proceedings.

A member of the council, Abdul Hameed, drew the attention of the chair towards the dilapidated condition of the Mohammad Ali Jauhar Road.

He claimed that the members were performing their due role but the officials concerned were not cooperating with them.

He said only 40 per cent work on a Nullah had been completed in two years and substandard material had been used in the project.

Mr Hameed demanded that the Taluka Nazim should order an inquiry into the matter.

The Naib Nazim of union council-16, Ali Akbar Vighiyo, raised the issue of shortage of sanitary staff.

Supporting Mr Vighiyo, Ghaffar Shah said no criteria had been fixed for assigning duties in different areas to sanitary staff. He said some union councils had been given 16 sanitary workers while the others had been given 70 workers.

The council approved some development works and appointment of a consultant for the bus terminal project.

The convener adjourned the session for Saturday.

AIOU: The regional director, Allama Iqbal Open University, Hyderabad, here on Wednesday announced that the autumn semester examinations of the university for the year 2002 would commence on May 5.
