Arnold to lead Sri Lanka ‘A’

COLOMBO, April 30: Russel Arnold will skipper a Sri Lanka ‘A’ side against Pakistan in a one-day warm-up cricket game at P. Saravanamuttu Stadium here on May 7.

For Arnold, dropped from the national squad after a low scoring World Cup, the game will provide an opportunity to convince the selectors that he is ready to return to international cricket.

The squad includes several one-day specialists vying for a place in the triangular series, involving Pakistan, New Zealand and hosts Sri Lanka .

Sri Lanka ‘A’ squad: Avishka Gunawardene, Michael Vandort, Jehan Mubarak, Russel Arnold (captain), Tillekeratne Dilshan, Chamara Silva, Upul Chandana, Kaushalya Weeraratne, Dinusha Fernando, Anushka Polonowita, Sahan Wijeratne, Ranga Dias, Thilina Thushara.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka’s troubled cricket control board is set to hold elections in June after being managed by government-appointed committees for the past four years, officials said on Wednesday.

The board ran into trouble following its last election in March 1999 when incumbent chief Thilanga Sumathipala defeated a close relative of President Chandrika Kumaratunga.—AFP
