Lawyers observe strike

TOBA TEK SINGH, April 30: Lawyers observed a complete strike on Wednesday against the registration of a case against former general secretary Chaudhry Tanvir Husain of the district Bar on the complaint of tehsil Nazim Chaudhry Rafiq for attacking on him.

Meanwhile, the general body of the DBA adopted a resolution in a meeting demanding the police authorities to register a case against the Nazim under sections 504 and 506 of PPC.

The meeting announced that if the case against the lawyer was not withdrawn within 10 days, the community would go on strike.

A row between the Nazim and Advocate Tanvir started a few days ago when the latter visited the former’s office over some issue. According to lawyers, the Nazim misbehaved with them, while the Nazim accused the lawyers of attacking on him.

Advocate Tanvir was granted bail before arrest by a district and session judge till May 7.

SUICIDE: A lawyer allegedly committed suicide on Wednesday in Kamalia.

Advocate Rana Iqbal of Dargai Shah locality got married a week ago but differences developed between the couple. The lawyer hanged himself with a rope tied to a ceiling fan.

ACQUITTED: A district and sessions judge acquitted a man of murder charges on Wednesday when no eyewitness appeared before him to testify against the accused. Ramzan had shot dead his son Akhtar and his granddaughter Shamim over her marriage dispute on Feb 21. The judge had to acquit him as no eyewitness appeared before him.

OFFICE-BEARERS: The following are the Pakistan Medical Association, Pirmahal, office-bearers elected on Wednesday:

Dr Saeed Akhtar (president), Dr Muhammad Ramzan (vice-president), Dr Asif Nadeem (general secretary), Dr Hafiz Muhammad Sharif (joint secretary), Dr Zahid Iqbal Jamshed finance secretary and Dr Amin Akhtar (media secretary).

WALKOUT: The Gojra district council members staged a walkout on Wednesday from a council meeting and wore black arm bands on the cancellation of transfer order of Gojra tehsildar.

The transfer of tehsildar was ordered when the council adopted a resolution against him in its last meeting.

Earlier, Arshad Noori and Khalifa Dilber Husain termed the cancellation of transfer order as an insult of the house because it had adopted a unanimous resolution against the tehsildar for indulging in corruption.

District Naib Nazim Haji Ghulam Rabbani and treasury member Tahir Pervaiz claimed in their speeches that the order was not cancelled by the Nazim rather it was cancelled by provincial government on the pressure of the assembly members.

Later, on the request of treasury members, they ended the boycott.

District Nazim Chaudhry Ashfaq told the house that he also wanted the removal of corrupt officials. But he was helpless before the provincial assembly.
