Resistance to anti-poppy drive subsides

By Our Correspondent

QUETTA, April 29: Tribesmen in areas of Qila Abdullah district have given up resistance against the anti-poppy operation that continued on Tuesday without any unpleasant incident, Frontier Constabulary sources told Dawn.

Poppy crop over 2,800 acres has been destroyed during the operation by the law enforcement agencies in different districts of the province.

The action in Pinakai area is over and the administration distributed flour, sugar and milk.

Sources said that the Ghazabund scouts commandant and Qila Abdullah district coordination officer had assured the elders of the area that the operation’s only objective was to destroy poppy. The elders were asked to cooperate in the operation. The operation was going on in parts of the district besides Khuzdar, Wad, Barkhan and Kohlu, sources said.
