Shah Khan races to third straight win
KARACHI, April 27: Shah Khan, a bay four-year-old colt, completed a splendid hat trick of victories for beaming owner Mohammad Ali Khan, when the Summer Gymkhana Meeting got under way at the Karachi Racecourse on Sunday.
Partnered once again by Tariq Mahmood, the colt took a flying start when the gates flew open and never looking back galloped past the winning post, leaving the rest of the field trailing in his wake. Bull Dancer settling down in the straight with young Tariq Baran in the saddle, grabbed the second spot from Sweet Grandy, after veteran jockey M. Mazhar replaced M. Yousuf at the starting gate, while Mark completed the frame.
But the most impressive winner on the afternoon’s programme was Syed K. Kamal’s bay horse Wing Commander. Ridden impressively by M. Yousuf, Wing Commander collared the raging favourite I’m The King, with Wonder Thunder finishing third ahead of Saligna. The rider astride the latter M. Shehzad, never at any time in the five furlong journey seemed interested to win or even try to grab a berth chance.
The day’s honours however belonged to Syed Ali Gouhar Shah, who finished the afternoon with a brace of winners.
In the opening race his bay mare Noor-un-Nisa getting off to a very slow start, came in with a thundering burst in the home stretch to overtake front runner Black Gift and Royal Wisdom.
Then in the fifth race, his bay horse Royal Lancer upset the apple-cart by beating the speedy Great Bakht and the talk of the town’s Champion Lady, who finished the race a bad third with a bad cut in her leg. Also sharing in the celebrations was riding boy Naveed, who rode both the winners and the flamboyant trainer, Karim Agha, who trained both the horses.
Striker, with Muzaffar Hussain in the saddle, won the second event from Even Top and Rukhsar, while Auzy, who created such a stir last Sunday by finishing a bad fourth, was soundly beaten by Little Sunny and the fast approaching Trust Again.
Mubashar Prince piloted by jockey Ashraf, never let the connections down, winning the sixth race from Love Land with plenty to spare.
Ray Of Light, pulled hook, line and sinker by jockey Abdul Jabbar last week, won the seventh race on the afternoon’s programme. With Imamdin this time in the saddle, Ray Of Light made short work of Sweet Emotions and the brave grey colt Mera Jugnoo.
