SWABI, April 27: Swabi’s district and UC Nazims have demanded that the parliamentarians stop “meddling” in the function of the district governments.

“They should take steps to strengthen the new system, instead of weakening it,” Sher Zaman Sher, the district Nazim, Masood Jabbar, the tehsil Nazim, and Muqarab Khan, the UC Nazim, told newsmen at a function here on Sunday.

They said the district council had already adopted a resolution in this regard as some ministers were bent upon crippling the working of the district governments.

Mr Sher said the local bodies elections were held on a non-party basis and the political parties should give up the idea of weakening this setup.

“If the parliamentarians are really interested in the welfare of the people they should extend a helping hand to the district governments,” he added.

The ministers, he said, should compare the development work carried out over the past five decades with that undertaken in two years under the local governments to see the difference.

Masood Jabbar said there was a need for cooperation between the elected MPs and the local governments, so that the people become the ultimate beneficiary, with the construction of roads, hospitals and educational institutions.

Salim Khan Muqarab said there was no need to create a new rivalry, which could harm the national integrity and weaken the economic position.

Meanwhile, women councillors have said they will continue to boycott the district council session for as long as their demands are not met.

They demanded that their Rs200 honoraria per day should be increased to Rs500 so that they could meet the necessary expenditure while discharging public duties.

The treasury benches had earlier told the women councillors that they would send their demand to the provincial government, but they stuck to their guns.
