JHANG, April 26: A union council Nazim was arrested by Athhara Hazari police on the information given by the leader of a gang of carjackers.
According to police, accused Ubaidur Rahman, a resident of Jhang city, allegedly led a gang of carjackers, which also included two police head constables, Mubasher, now terminated from service, and Afzal, who was facing an inquiry.
Ubaid snatched cars and sold them to people in far off places. He disposed of a stolen car to a man in Ahmadpur East. A few days later, he hatched a plan to take back the car. He raided the house of the man with the head constables impersonating as inspectors and Ubaid as an accused in handcuffs. They not only recovered the car but also received Rs100,000 as bribe for not arresting the man.
Police said the crime came to surface when one of the ‘aggrieved’ gang members disclosed the matter to the then SHO of Jhang Sadar police station. The gang members were arrested with the stolen car which was parked at the Police Lines.
A few days later, UC Nazim Tipu Sultan Bhatti, reportedly got the car on supardari allegedly on forged ownership papers. On Wednesday night, the anti-car lifting staff raided his house and took him to an undisclosed place. The police party also took the car with them.
According to police Tipu Sultan was released on the intervention of former district Naib Nazim Syed Asad Hayat. No case was registered against him.
When contacted by telephone, Mr Sultan told Dawn that he got the car on the orders of a court, which allowed him to take the car after obtaining a police report. Had there been anything wrong with his papers, why the police released him and did not register a case against him instead?
Mr Sultan held a top personality of the district government responsible for his arrest, who, fearing his imminent ouster through a vote of no confidence, was resorting to negative tactics against the Nazims of the opposition.
No member of the anti-car lifting squad or the Jhang DPO was available for comments on the incident.
CASE REGISTERED: Massan police have registered another criminal case against the imprisoned union council Rasoolpur Nazim, Iftikhar Ahmad Baslana, on the report of one Azmat Ali of Kabli village. The complainant accused Baslana of stealing 30 trees from his land.
Baslana, who is also the chairman of Shah Jewna market committee, is already in jail in a case under Section 7 of the Anti-terrorism Act for manhandling Massan SHO on the police station premises during the investigation of a case.
The Jhang DPO has appointed the Chiniot ASP to hold an inquiry and submit a report.
