KARACHI: Govt working to meet city’s demand for water: Ibad

KARACHI, April 26: Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad has said that the government is paying special attention to water supply projects in the metropolis and the ongoing projects are being reviewed to ensure they meet its future water requirement.
Sindh Governor, who was talking to a delegation of an international company KSB-Amri, having specialisation in water supply projects, said if the government failed to pay due attention to the demand for water, the gap in the coming years would further be widened.
Of the total 465 million gallons of water being supplied to Karachi from the Indus and the Hub Dam sources daily, 450 mgd is being received from the Indus source and the remaining from the Hub Dam.
The city’s annual rate of population growth is five per cent, and 50,000 households increase every year causing immense pressure over its civic facilities whose expansion do not commensurate with the pressure.
In order to meet the water needs of the city in future, the government invited reputed concerns having speciality of procuring water supply. In this regard a Saudi firm is also preparing a feasibility for installation of a treatment plant for desalination and conversion of ocean water.
The governor said to the delegation led by Dr Augus Susanto, who is its Asia-pacific region president, and its Managing Director Arif Ejaz, if they had any plan to contribute to the government efforts in this regard, they could submit their proposals to the planning and development department and the water board for scrutiny and feasibility reports.
Dr Ibad also discussed with them the ongoing K-3 water project to add 100 more mgd water supply to the city. He asked them to come up with schemes which could further improve water supply and sewerage system in the metropolis.
Earlier, the delegation informed the governor that their firm was already working on water supply projects in different cities of the country and was also keen to assist the government in meeting the future water demand of the city.
DESALINATION PLANT: The Defence Housing Authority Administrator Brig Asif Ghazali on Saturday said the DHA Co-generation Power Desalination Project would provide 3million gallons of water, per day, by converting sea water into potable water, adds PPI.
The project would also yield 85MW electricity to overcome power shortage, he stated at a meeting of the Defence Residents Society and the management of the DHA, held on Saturday.
He informed the meeting that negotiations with the KESC and SSGC were in final stages and ground breaking ceremony of the project would be held soon.
Brig Ghazali said beautification of the areas along Sea View was an essential ingredient of the Karachi Beach Development Project, being undertaken by the DHA.
He directed the departments concerned to ensure beautification and improvement of all major roads in the DHA on priority basis.
He asked the officials of the Clifton Cantt Board to undertake the maintenance, repair and replacement of street lights on major roads in the DHA within a period of one month.
He hoped that the residents’ society would continue to assist the DHA administration by providing feed back on different issues of the area.
