KARACHI, April 24: At least nine bandits, including four in police uniform, took away cash and jewellery from a house in New Karachi early Thursday morning.
Mohammad Bilal, 62, a bookbinder, told Dawn that the men had scaled the wall of his house in Sector 5-G at Kali Market in New Karachi.
“They broke the iron door of the house and demanded valuables and cash from us,” he said.
However, the DIG operations and the SHO of the police station concerned, when contacted, said they were unaware of the robbery.
Mr Bilal said four persons were in police uniform while the rest were in plain clothes carrying weapons.
“They hit me with the rifle butt in the head and in the back,” he told this reporter.
“As they were collecting valuables, my daughter managed to inform the police on ‘15’, who told her that they were dispatching a mobile,” he said and complained that no police van turned up.
When Mr Bilal again called “15” in the morning, a mobile came to the house but advised him to lodge an FIR with the police station.
“I went to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for treatment but they told me to bring a letter from the police station,” he said. “When I went to the police station, they refused to register the FIR and give me a letter for treatment at the hospital,” he said.
The police said they were conducting an inquiry into the matter, Mr Bilal said.
He said a jewellery set worth Rs12,500, a gold chain worth Rs3,000 and set of silver jewellery worth Rs700 besides Rs5,000 had been taken away by the bandits.
ROBBED: An expatriate was deprived of cash and valuables in front of UBL Sport Complex on Wednesday.
Police said armed men riding a car intercepted Mohammad Ali and snatched 8,000 Riyals, wrist-watches and other valuables and fled. Police said the victim had returned from Saudi Arabia.
Sources said armed men had identified themselves as policemen showing police ID cards.
Two of the suspects were wearing police caps, sources added.
