KARACHI, April 23: Amid tight security, a total of 10,200 candidates will be appearing in their intermediate annual examinations from today (April 24) at 148 exam centres in the city.

In order to avoid any law and order situation and to stop undue interference by outsiders in the examinations centres, the City Nazim has imposed Section 144 Cr.PC.

The Board of Intermediate Education has also finalized arrangements in this regard, and has dispatched examination material, including admit cards to students.

The exam centres have been established at government and private colleges and higher secondary schools in the city, and about 10,200 male and female candidates, who got themselves registered with the board for science, general science, commerce (regular) and home economics groups examinations will be appearing in the examination in the first phase.

A notification by the City District Government Karachi said that the City Nazim has issued necessary orders under Section 144 Cr.P.C., prohibiting movement or entrance of unconcerned public within limits of 200 meters of the examination centres during the scheduled examination hours, either morning or evening.

“The order has been issued to prevent disturbances, danger to lives of candidates and staff and illegal act by hooligans. The order shall come into force at once and remain in force for a period of seven days, provided withdrawn or modified earlier, said the City Nazim’s declaration.

Talking to Dawn on Wednesday, the chairman of the Board, Prof Iftikhar Zaidi, said all possible steps have been taken for a peaceful conduct of examinations and there was no need to defer the examinations.

He said admit cards have been delivered to colleges and no complaints have been received in this regard.

Almost all students taking examinations on April 24 have been delivered cards through colleges, he said, adding that due to recent acts of hooliganism at Urdu Arts and Commerce College, admits cards of a number of students had been destroyed, but now they have been provided with duplicate cards by the BIE.

To a question, he said that BIE had not established any new examinations centres during the last couple of days and all examinations would be held at the centres announced earlier by the board.
