PESHAWAR, April 23: An anti-terrorism court here on Wednesday convicted two
persons charged with kidnapping a student and keeping him in wrongful confinement.
The court presided over by Akhter Zareef Khan sentenced one of the convicts, Zahir Ilyas, to seven years rigorous imprisonment with fine of Rs5,000. The second convict, Minhaj, was sentenced to two years imprisonment and fined Rs5,000.
The court acquitted the remaining four accused — Abdullah, Fazal Qayyum, Khan Badshah and Momin — due to lack of evidence.
The accused had faced trial for the kidnapping of a student of 8th class, Jawad Ali. According to the prosecution, in January 2001, Jawad Ali, who was a student of Frontier Model School, was kidnapped by the accused in a yellow cab in the jurisdiction of Faqirabad police station.
Later, the police recovered the boy from a house in Afghan Colony.
The police also arrested Zahir from the spot. Other accused were arrested after Zahir’s arrest.
DRUG PUSHERS: The Peshawar district and sessions judge, Hayat Ali Shah, convicted two drug pushers and sentenced them to life imprisonment with fine of Rs50,000 each.
The judge, in his capacity as special judge, anti-narcotics, observed that the prosecution had proved its case against the accused.
The convicts, Dilnawaz and Fida Mohammad, were accused of carrying 33kg of charas in their vehicle when they were intercepted by the customs mobile squad and arrested.
