PESHAWAR, April 21: Joint Action Committee (JAC) of teachers, students and doctors held protest demonstration in front of the provincial assembly against the proposed Model University Ordinance on Monday.

A large number of teachers, students and doctors, holding placards and banners assembled in front of the assembly building to protest against the controversial ordinance and prevailing lawlessness on the university campus.

A press release said that the JAC also presented a 13-point charter of demand to senior minister Sirajul Haq, calling upon the government to review the ordinance and take the teachers into confidence.

They demanded of the government to lift a ban on the student unions inside campus and hold elections of the student unions and teachers associations in educational institutions. They proposed to appoint vice-chancellor from among the academic staff of the university.

The press release said that the JAC would take strike action in front of the Peshawar Press Club on Tuesday, if the government didn’t fulfil their demands.

The minister assured the teachers that the government would try to solve their problems. Taking serious notice of the incidents of carjacking on the campus, he said that stolen vehicles would be recovered soon.
