Meeting reviews colleges’ situation: 20 detained, released

KARACHI, April 21: Police picked up as many as 20 students after clashes between two student groups on Monday.
In the clashes on Saturday, the police had arrested 70 students and released most of them subsequently.
On Monday, as many as 15 students suffered injuries at various educational institutions.
The police said they had sent additional force to the troubled educational institutions to control the law and order. Rangers were also deployed at some of the educational institutions, including Dawood College.
Police picked up five members of All-Pakistan Mohajir Students Organisation near Shaheen Complex after they got an information that some students wanted to create law and order situation. The police also recovered a TT pistol from them.
A senior police official said that after verification from the home department, the licence of TT pistol was found valid and they were released.
A senior police official said that a meeting was held at the home department on Monday to sort out the issue prevailing on the campus.
The meeting reviewed the law and order in educational institutions and decided that a stern action would be taken against law-breakers.
The meeting, convened by the Sindh home secretary, was attended by the elected representatives of the MQM and the Jamat-i-Islami. IGP Sindh Syed Kamal Shah, CCPO Asad Ashraf Malik and DIG Operations Tariq Jamil were also present.
The meeting also decided to make all-out efforts to create a congenial atmosphere in educational institutions.
Following the meeting, the police released all those picked up from various educational institutions, sources said.
