KARACHI, April 21: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement has said it will not allow any educational institution to become a “no-go area.”
Speaking at a press conference at Karachi Press Club on Monday, Sindh Assembly members from the MQM Faisal Sabzwari, Moin Khan, Qamar Mansoor and Syed Shakir Ali said a certain students’ organization had resorted to violence in educational institutions in the city on Monday and roughed up students belonging to the All-Pakistan Mohajir Students’ Organization.
“In various educational institutions, 25 students of ours were injured in attacks, 22 of whom are under treatment at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. At Islamia Science College, nine students belonging to our political party were manhandled. Two injured students were taken to Civil Hospital. When activists of the students’ organization misbehaved with a DSP, the Nazim of the Islami Jamiat Talaba was arrested,” they recalled.
They claimed that provocative slogans were raised at Sir Syed University, Federal Urdu Science College, Jinnah College, Premier College and the University of Karachi on Monday. “Since we are in government, two days go we held negotiations with representatives of the Jamaat-i-Islami and the Islami Jamiat Talaba at the office of the DIG operations, Tariq Jamil, to ensure that peace and tranquillity in educational institutions is not disrupted. We had even arrived at an understanding. But the agreement was violated when provocative activities began on Monday morning,” they explained.
