HYDERABAD, April 20: The Sindh Chamber of Agriculture has criticized the provincial chief minister’s statement that construction of the greater Thal canal cannot be stopped and the Sindh government has decided to approach the Council of Common Interest in this regard.

The chamber, at its weekly meeting held here on Sunday, reminded Sindh Chief Minister Ali Mohammad Mahar that the canal project had been rejected by the CCI at its meeting on Sept 16, 1991. It added that there was no use going to the CCI on the canal issue again.

It said that the ongoing construction of the project was in violation of the 1991 Water Accord.

The meeting called upon the Sindh government to pursue the resolution unanimously adopted by the Sindh Assembly against the project.

It resolved to put pressure on the Sindh government to oppose disposal of drainage water from Punjab into the Left Bank Outfall Drain and the Right Bank Outfall Drain.

The meeting stressed the need for opposing the national water policy. Syed Qamaruzzaman Shah presided over the meeting.
