KARACHI, April 19: Messrs. Yahya Shahid and Faraz Shahid’s four-year-old bay colt Donatello is fancied in these columns to triumph again, when the Summer Gymkhana Race Meeting gets under way at the Karachi Racecourse on Sunday afternoon.
Participating in the concluding race with 10 other highly bred runners, Donatello, although promoted up to run amongst some top Division contenders, is still fancied as our day’s best, going back into his last run, when the bay colt splendidly ridden by Muzaffar Hussain, lowered the colours of High Standard, Order Of The Day and Captain Crash, carrying nine stones and two pounds on his back.
All in all, eight events have been chalked out on the racing card, all to be contested over the sprinting distance of five furlongs.
The first race begins at 1.00 p.m.
Another runner that should not be beaten on Sunday is leading owner M. Ateeq’s thoroughbred bay colt Mickey Mikado II.
The one-eyed sibling from Flaming Arrow out of My Stick Smile, participating in a big field of 18 runners in the sixth race, should win this race hands down even after being penalised to carry 9-4 on his back.
In his last outing, Mickey Mikado II, was only tried for a place chance and the colt came in with a flying burst in the last half furlong of the race to finish a close second behind the winner Sarazen.
Mickey Mikado II should be followed home by Golden Voice and Ray Of Light.
One more runner that should make amends this afternoon, is High Standard in the following event.
The highly bred chestnut filly from Strides by Strides out of Tiny Tot, was soundly beaten by 3 1/4 lengths by Donatello last Sunday, when on song to complete a hat-trick of victories for her proud owner.
Penalised to carry 9-3 on her back and with a good lad astride, High Standard should resume her winning ways, chased all the way past the winning post by heavyweight Jugni, last week’s winner Blue’s Night and Sarazen.
The bay horse Tipu Fight after his stunning win over Little Sunny last week with riding boy Najam Iqbal in the saddle, should win the opening race for the mere asking, followed home by Little Sunny, Usdadon Ka Ustad and Splendid Winner.
In the next event, the bay horse Rich Valiant finishing on the board in his last two outings, should pass the winning post this time ahead of Bye Bye, Daru and Silent Fire.
Two weeks ago, the chestnut horse Bank Manager piloted by riding boy Asif Khan II, surprised all and sundry by winning a five furlong sprint from Silent Fire, Raysham and the speedy Lawrence Of Arabia.
Bank Manager, although carrying the top weight of 9-0, has the capabilities to overcome the likes of Prism Of Life and Ceaser’s Palace and register his second win on the trot in the third event.
The fourth race with 16 runners vying for the top honours, should provide the racing fans with plenty of thrills and spills. The speedy bay mare Great Bakht is our fancy to win this five furlong sprint, chased all the way to the winning post by Rajwar and the game grey colt Mere Jugnoo.
If all goes well, Syed Taufiq Kamal’s bay horse Knight Fighter with a good lad astride, should finish the fifth race ahead of The Shoaib and Black Magic, with Reliable joining the fray.
All said and done, an interesting day of horseracing awaits the racing fans.
