Potatoes exposed to the elements

SAHIWAL, April 19: Harvested potatoes lying open in the fields are spoiling in the hot weather as all the available cold stores in the district are packed to capacity.

This concern was expressed by Kissan Board spokesman Mehr Muhammad Abbas while talking to newsmen here on Saturday.

He said the government was out to announce the export policy of vegetables, but no proper arrangements had so far been made in this regard.

Not only the growers would suffer huge losses, but also the government in terms of foreign exchange if timely export of vegetables was not arranged, he said.

Jamaat-i-Islami Amir Dr Anwarul Haq warned that the Kissan Board would hold demonstrations outside the provincial and national assemblies if the government adopted delaying tactics in the purchase of harvested crops.

THREE KILLED: Three people were killed and six others sustained injuries in two different road accidents here on Saturday. A speeding motorcycle (PK-3014) rammed into a roadside tree on the Sahiwal-Pakpattan Road near Jahan Khan village. As a result, both the riders Siddique and Ghaffar died on the spot.

On the GT Road near Chak 115/15-L, a wagon (AK-A/1275) at high speed overturned as a result of which Omaidullah died instantly while six other passengers received injuries.

Police have registered separate cases.

ARREST ORDERS: The Punjab IGP on Saturday ordered immediate arrest of 320 proclaimed offenders involved in heinous crimes and those absconders who were awarded death penalties and life-term. He also directed the DPO to submit him a report.
