Proper disposal of waste urged

Published April 19, 2003

FAISALABAD, April 18: The existing waste disposal system in the city has virtually become ineffective because of operational, technical and financial difficulties faced by the Tehsil Municipal Administration.

Too many activities seem to have taken in hand without any planning and taking all the consequences into account that has led to inefficient operations and misuse of funds.

The TMA disposes of over 80 per cent wastes at temporary storage places through municipal sweepers.

Heaps of garbage can be seen on all city roads, streets and even in front of government offices posing health hazards among the people.

The situation at permanent waste sites is no less pathetic and garbage is found littered around the designated places.

The survey reveals that the TMA has the capacity to lift only 30 to 40 per cent municipal waste because of the shortage of vehicles and resources. The municipal vehicles dump their loads alongside major city roads just one kilometre away from the city because of the long distances to permanent dump sites.

Already short in number, still about 30 per cent garbage lifting vehicles are not in operative condition due to variety of reasons.

On the other hand, citizens are confronted with a number of problems due to insanitary conditions prevailing all around the city. The gravity of the situation can be judged from the fact that scores of people have deputed ‘private sanitary workers’ to sweep roads and streets in their localities and dispose of the waste at proper places.

The TMA’s sanitary staff is just playing the role of personal employees of the elected representatives of local councils. Dozens of scavengers are seen working at the houses and outhouses of Nazims and councillors of union councils and tehsil government.
