ISLAMABAD, April 16: The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) on Wednesday signed two contracts worth over $2 million to provide contraceptives in Pakistan for an effective family planning.

The UNFPA in collaboration with Greenstar Social Marketing, a private sector social marketing organization in the country, would spend this amount for expansion of the latter’s core programmes of family planning and reproductive health. The agreement was signed by Oliver Brasseur, Country Representative UNFPA, and Dr Rehana Ahmed, Chief Executive Officer Greenstar Social Marketing.

Mr Oliver said:”This agreement is in continuation of our support to Greenstar for the improvement of the health of low- income Pakistanis.” He maintained that UNFPA was the world’s largest internationally-funded source of population assistance to developing countries. One fourth of the world’s population assistance from donor nations to developing countries was channelled through UNFPA.

He said the fund’s support to the Government of Pakistan spanned well over a quarter of century and had contributed towards enhancing the capacity of both the private and public sector organizations working for quality reproductive health and family planning services.

Dr Rehana Ahmed thanked the fund for recognising Greenstar’s services for providing better health care services.
