KARACHI, April 16: Almost all those localities hooked to the Hub Dam source will either go dry or receive scant supply with low pressure for the next couple of days owing to a drop in voltage at the Khwaja Ajmair Nagri pumping station.
According to the officials of the city government’s water and sanitation department, sudden drop in voltage from 350 ampere to 330 ampere at the Khwaja Ajmair Nagri pumping station at 6.10pm on Wednesday has resulted in the stoppage of the pumping of water to the areas hooked to Hub Dam source, from four out of total 10 pumps installed at the pumping station.
“Irony of the fact is that, when approached, KESC officials, said that some fault had developed in a grid station and it might be rectified by 18th or 19th April,” a W&S department official said.
A spokesman for the W&S department said that a law and order situation might arise in the localities hooked to the Hub source as the gap between their water-supply schedule might increase from regular 72 hours to 144 hours.
The areas to suffer most in the next 24 hours include Orangi, Baldia, New Karachi and SITE towns, the spokesman added.
Meanwhile, residents of North Karachi’s sector 14-B (Shadman Town) complained that their locality had been deprived of water for the last one week.
They said that in the absence of piped-water they had no choice but to consume sub-soil unhygienic water at the cost of their health.
The localities which went without water on Wednesday as part of the W&S department plan of diverting Indus water to the areas hooked to the Hub source include Old City, Garden East, Garden West, Soldier Bazaar, Saddar, Shikarpur Colony, Cosmopolitan Society and parts of Lyari.
