Al Jarrar fancied to win feature event

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, April 15: If nothing goes wrong, Al Jarrar, a five- year-old grey looks a better proposition to pick up the spoils in the  feature event of the midweek Lahore Gymkhana races at the Racecourse on Wednesday.

He is contesting in the Lodhran Plate, a class VII division I (A) to be run over the sprinting distance of 1200 metres. There are only seven runners barring last-minute withdrawals.

Bay Khan Bahadur, who has won two races in-a-row and another bay Dahis Again may prove thorns in Al Jarrar’s way to victory. The other four contestants have not shown any form worth rating as serious contenders in this fifth and last race of the day.

Five-year-old roan White Line, who was twice unlucky to be beaten to second place in his previous outings, should make amends this time and win the supporting and fourth event, the Lodhran Plate, class VII division 1 (B). He should be followed by Sun Of Gold, who finished fourth last time out.

Bay mare Waseem’s Love, who won convincingly on April 2 last, seems a cut above in class vis-a-vis her 15 rivals in the third race. The distance suits her very well, provided her connections desired so.

Dancing Margina and Lot Of Thanks are the next choices in the same order.

In the opener at least six contestants seems to be on chance. By virtue of his previous run Final Count Down has an edge over the others. Las Pal Mas and Tiger’s Wood are also in form besides Blue Champion and Home Maid, who is a habitual bad starter. If Home Maid comes out of the starting gates on a level start she can upset all calculations.

In all, five events have been carded for the afternoon programme. All races will be contested over 1200 metres.

Meanwhile the Lahore Race Club (LRC) chairman Tariq Aziz has asked all owners not to run unfit horses in races with a view to making the sports competitive and fair.

During a meeting with the owners he pointed out that there seems a tendency to run unfit animals in order to bring them down in handicap. This gives rise to malpractice in racing which should be discouraged.

He advised them to let the handicapper work without any pressure and if they have any complaint against handicapping, they should make it in writing to the LRC secretary.

All complaints would be dealt with on merit and justice would be done, he assured them.

The first race will be held at 2.30pm.
