KARACHI, April 12: Khan Baba, a nine-year-old bay gelding, starts off as our day’s best, when the Summer Gymkhana Meeting gets under way at the Karachi Racecourse on Sunday.
Although beaten by Ray Of Light last week to finish second for the second consecutive time, Khan Baba participating in the fifth race going over five furlongs is on song this time to pass the winning post ahead of Flying Bird, Sachin and Mera Jugnoo, in a big field of 18 runners.
Eight events have been drawn up on the racing programme, all to be contested over the sprinting distance of five furlongs.
The first race begins at 1.00 p.m.
Owner Mohammad Alim Khan should have another success through his four-year-old bay colt Shah Khan, an impressive winner last Sunday under jockey Tariq Mahmood.
Contesting in the third race also in a big field of 18 runners with Tariq once again in the saddle, Shah Khan should gallop home to victory closely followed home by Khas ul Khas and Sovero, with Clever Cat and Rich Valiant joining the fray.
In the opener with 13 contestants trotting up to the starting gate, Powerful Tarzan, with an improved run should win this five furlong outing from Century and Sunday Silence, although Gharnata and Law Of Nature if ticking, will also be there at the winning post.
With a good lad aboard, Striker should pick up the spoils in the following event.
However, Rukhsar playing the bridesmaid for the third consecutive time last Sunday, will be going all out to grab the top spot.
But then again if the chestnut horse Ustadon Ka Ustad does not swerve back towards the starting gates when the race begins, it will indeed be a different story to tell.
In the fourth race of the afternoon, Slim Fit trained by Allah Judrio is in a class of his own in this event, and if ticking, should win the five furlong sprint with plenty to spare.
Black Door Man finishing on the board in his last three runs, should be engaged in a keen duel with Ceaser’s Palace for the second place.
Reliable unlucky to lose last week by a short head to Maharaja, should make amends on Sunday afternoon in the sixth race, although penalised to carry a crushing weight of nine stones and five pounds on his back.
In this race Metro will be a hard nut to crack and so will be the chestnut gelding Prosmatic.
The grey mare Blue’s Night after two impressive victories under Kashif Ali, was beaten hands down by Sarazen and Mickey Mikado II, with Great Bakht completing the frame.
After studying the tapes after that race something looked rather fishy.
Blue’s Night a speedy customer always takes a level jump at the starting gate and never looking back sprints for the winning post whenever she is tried.
But last Sunday, to the surprise of all and sundry, Blue’s Night the firm favourite and seeking a hattrick of wins, took a late start with Great Bakht hitting the front followed by the eventual winner Sarazen, Micky Mikado II.
Although Blue’s Night managed to move into the second spot nearing the bend, she found great difficulty in passing Great Bakht turning into the straight. Blue’s Night finally did take over the running from Great Bakht but by this time the mare was indeed a spent force.
Sher Mohammad, the rider on Sarazen just bid his time and raced past Blue’s Night, with Micky Mikado II close on his heels.
Blue’s Night is participating in the seventh race on the programme going over the same distance and if all goes well should run a better race this time, chased all the way over the five furlongs by Ray Of Light, Knight Fighter and Great Bakht.
In the concluding race where 16 runners will vie for the spoils, the chestnut filly High Standard with a good lad astride, should register another sparkling victory, with Captain Crash, Order Of The Day and Donetello following in his wake.
