LAHORE, April 12: Bay filly Democracy, after her Pakistan Derby win and second in Eclipse Stakes Of Pakistan, looks well set to gallop away with the PIA 777 Super Jet Pakistan Cup, when the 27th Lahore Winter Meeting gets under way at the Racecourse on Sunday.
The cup has been instituted by the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) to promote its newly inducted 777 Super Jet service.
The filly had started the season as a mediocre runner but in between the winter meetings she began improving with each run, winning four races in including the Pakistan
Derby 2003 and placing second as many times in her ten outings. Her performances earned for her the title of a shining model of equine perfection among the four-year-old colts and fillies.
The progeny of Cisco Wells out-of-Let Get Going is expected to stay the gruelling distance of 2800 metres and win this longest distance race in the country. Bay colt The Conqueror, who has equally good turf record of seven victories and thrice second in his 11 outings todate and the much talked about prodigy Miracle should pose serious challenge to Democracy’s way for total supremacy. Only five contenders are in the field for this fifth race of the day.
In all, six events have been carded with the other five going over the sprinting distance of 1200 metres. The first event begins at 2pm.
The main supporting and third event, the Ginza Cup, a class IV handicap race has eight acceptors barring last-minute withdrawals. Bay colt Saqi, who was beaten by two-and-a-half lengths by Blue’s Traveller on March 30 looks the day’s best proposition. He should make amends and win followed by Royal Fantasy, Zargar and Laser Lass.
In the second supporting
and fourth event, the Nero’s Dream Cup to have gone over 1200 metres Prime Panther and Flame looks good. Both should fight it out. Key Guy Princess might put up some resistance to them before bowing out..
