ISLAMABAD, April 8: National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Tuesday informed the Prime Minister secretariat that it would arrest some senior officials of Capital Development Authority (CDA) with a couple of days for their alleged involvement in taking heavy commission in a water supply pipelines project, sources told Dawn.

The project was launched in 1995 and the contract was awarded to Al Sadaat Pipes.

The source said in this connection, a reference had been prepared against some senior officials of the Authority, who allowed the use of substandard pipelines in sector G-6, G-7 and various other areas of the capital.

These officials include the director-general (services), Moinuddin Jamili, the director of Khanpur Dam, Junaid Karim, the deputy director-general (works), Jehanzeb Khan, and eight deputy directors.

At the time of contract awarding, Mr Jamili was performing duties as the director-general (services), while Junaid Karim and Jehanzeb Khan were working as director water supply development and director works respectively.

The pipelines were allegedly rusty and damaged, which not only polluted the water but also caused the loss of millions of rupees. The total cost of the project is stated to be Rs60 million.

The scam of substandard pipelines was first unearthed by an Army Monitoring Team (AMT) deployed in the CDA. Later, the case was handed over to the NAB for investigation.

Soon after it, Al Sadaat Pipes was awarded a contract by the Rawalpindi administration to lay pipelines for Khanpur Water Supply Project.
