KARACHI, April 8: Water supply position assumed an alarming proportions on Tuesday as a number of localities either went dry or received scant supply, adding miseries to the residents of the affected localities in this hot and humid weather.

The affected localities included Lyari, KDA Scheme-I, PECHS blocks 2 and 6, Gulshan-i-Iqbal’s blocks 2, 4-A, 10 and 10-A, different sectors of Baldia, Orangi, Shershah, Azizabad, Bangalore Town, Adamjee Nagar, Jinnah Cooperative Housing Society and adjoining areas.

Residents of the affected localities complained that although they had been experiencing an acute water shortage for the last couple of days, the concerned officials of the city government’s water and sanitation department have failed to improve the supply position.

DEMO: Perturbed residents of different parts of Lyari on Tuesday staged a sit-in on Chawkiwara Road, near Lyari Town, to voice their anger over persisting water shortage.

Traffic on the Chawkiwara Road remained suspended for more than an hour owing to the demonstration.

The demonstrators, most of whom belonged to Lyari’s Rexer Lane, Chawkiwara Road, Abdullah Shah Bukhari Road, raised slogans against the officials of the water and sanitation department.

The other parts of Lyari which have been experiencing acute water shortage for the last couple of days include Juman Shah Plot, Ibrahim Gul Road, Prof Ali Mohammad Shaheen Street, Alvi Road, Eidgah Lane and adjoining streets.

Meanwhile, Lyari Town’s Nazim Abdul Khaliq Juma has criticized the officials of the W&S department for not taking interest in resolving lingering water issue of the affected areas of Lyari.

Residents of affected localities criticised the officials of the W&S department for not setting up centres where they could register their water shortage complaints.

Taking an undue advantage of the persisting water shortage, private water tankers did a roaring business, selling tankers at exorbitant rates in the water-starved localities.
