KARACHI, April 6: Sarazen, a chestnut colt splendidly ridden by Sher Mohammad, ended the winning ways of the hot favourite Blue’s Night, at the Winter Race Meeting held on Sunday at the Karachi Racecourse.
With two fluent victories already in the bag, Blue’s Night partnered once again by Kashif Ali, got off to a horrible start jumping out fourth from the starting gate as soon as the race began. Great Bakht took a great start followed by Sarazen, Micky Mikado II and Blue’s Night, going all out for completing a hat-trick of victories for her owner Ashok.
Getting into her strides, Blue’s Night was now second behind Great Bakht approaching the bend. However, turning into the straight Blue’s Night had to really break into a sweat to collar Great Bakht to take over the running.
But the damage was already done, sprinting for the winning post Blue’s Night was running out of steam as she struggled desperately to reach the finishing line. On the other hand Sher Mohammad urged on Sarazen with a flurry of hands and heels and the chestnut colt responded magnificently and just managed to get his head in front and win the race by just 3/4 of a length from the fast appearing Mickey Mikado II. Blue’s Night was third, a further one and half lengths behind, with Great Bakht completing the frame.
The day’s racing honours was shared by jockey Tariq Mahmood, and trainer M. Pervaiz, who finished the afternoon’s programme on a winning note with a brace of winners apiece.
Partnering the four-year-old bay colt Shah Khan, in the second race, Tariq scored his first victory on the afternoon’s racing card by beating Rukhsar and Striker quite comfortably and then had a pillar to post triumph astride M.R. Hussain’s thoroughbred chestnut filly Jugni in the last race of the afternoon. Both these runners came from trainer M. Pervaiz’s stable, who also joined the revelry. The two might have ended the day’s racing programme on a higher not with a treble, but the bay gelding Khan Baba was beaten into the second spot by Ray Of Light ridden by Abdul Jabbar in the last strides, after Khan Baba led the field for most part of the five furlong journey in the fifth race.
Racing Leader having the services of Azeem in the saddle, won the opener from Rolling Thunder and Powerful Tarzen.
Afzaal Prince, a chestnut gelding partnered by Mumtaz Ali, scored the biggest upset of the afternoon, lowering the colours of the more fancied runners Rich Valiant, Sovero and Silent Fire in the third event.
The next race meeting is scheduled for Sunday, April 13.
