KARACHI: Urdu varsity senate meets on 9th

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, April 2: The first meeting of the Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology senate will be held at its Gulshan-i-Iqbal complex on April 9, with Chairman of the Higher Education Commission Prof Dr Atta-ur-Rehman as the chief guest.

A three-day meeting of the senate has been planned and in the absence of the chancellor of the university, ie President of Pakistan, the deputy chair (honorary) of the senate, Jamiluddin Aali, will preside over the meeting, sources said.

The meeting will be held in different sessions. The first session would be a introductory one, while in the second session, on April 9, senior teachers of the university and media representatives would be invited and apprised of the future projects and achievements made during the last five months of the university.

The technical sessions of the senate would begin on April 10 to discuss and consider 17 items on the agenda.

The logo and seal of the university would also be examined for approval.

Different committees would be constituted during the meeting in regard to preparation of the varsity’s statutes.

The problems of existing staff, which mainly belonged to the former Urdu Arts College and the Urdu Science College, would also be discussed.

According to a government notification, the staff of the two colleges have automatically gained the status of university staff and as such new rules in regard to their continuity of services and determination of their ranks are required to be framed, said a senior teacher of the university.

Since the university lacked the required number of associate professors and professors, particularly in the arts faculty, there is a dire need for creation of new posts and recruitment of teaching and non-teaching staff.
