Srinath and Kumble opt out
BANGALORE, April 1: Indian bowling spearhead Javagal Srinath and spin ace Anil Kumble have opted out of triangular one-day cricket series in Bangladesh from April 11 to 20.
Chairman of selectors, Brijesh Patel, said in Bangalore on Tuesday that Srinath had informed Board of Control for Cricket in India that he “is exhausted” after Cricket World Cup campaign and needs rest.
Meanwhile, English county Warwickshire have ruled out Indian fast bowler Zaheer Khan as a possible early season replacement for Shane Bond of New Zealand.
Bond is set to miss first two months of domestic campaign because of international commitments with New Zealand.
And Zaheer, who enjoyed a good World Cup, was the Bears’ first choice as cover.
But operations manager Keith Cook told BBC Sport website talks with Zaheer had broken down.
“We got to the stage of discussing a contract with Zaheer Khan, but similar to Shane he could not commit because of international duty,” he said.
“We need a player to be available for five championship and seven one-day matches while Shane is away, and Zaheer felt he would be unavailable for two of the four-day games.
“We are looking at two other players, which I won’t name, but we are closer to making an offer and should be ready to name somebody by Wednesday.”
Warwickshire, meanwhile, have ended their bid to sign Australian spinner Brad Hogg.
Hogg had been targeted as the side’s second overseas signing but has been ruled out of contention after being selected for his country’s tour to the West Indies.—PPI
