KARACHI, March 31: In all, 380 students of the 2002 batch were awarded Bachelor and Master’s degrees in Science, Arts, Commerce and Education at the 3rd convocation of the Jinnah University for Women, on Monday.
Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad presided over the function, which was attended by a large number of graduates, their parents and celebrities including diplomats. The governor, who is also patron of the private sector university for girls, announced cash awards — ranging from Rs10,000 to Rs50,000 — for the position-holders as well as two other students who recited verses from the holy Quran and rendered Naat on the occasion.
In his presidential address, Dr Ibad paid tribute to the services of late Maulvi Riazuddin Ahmed, the founder of the Anjuman-i-Islamia Trust, which has established about 18 educational institutions and libraries, including the Jinnah University for Women, in the city.
The governor said Mr Ahmad endeavoured devotedly and faithfully to enliven and translate the vision of Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah in the filed of education, especially women’s education. “It is indeed a truism that when you educate a man, you simply educate an individual, but when you educate a woman, you educate a generation,” he noted.
He appreciated the educational programmes of the university and said that the present age was an age of competition which required strive for excellence in every field. While suggesting the management and faculty of the university to direct their talent and energies to overcome the educational disadvantage of girls, he urged them to forge viable working relationships with other academic and research institutions in the country.
Congratulating the passing-out graduates, the governor pointed out to them that they should try to lead a life which is both useful and interesting. “You will come across many things that need to be changed for better: perhaps a cleaner home, a more hygienic environment, better civic sense and an honest attitude towards work,” he added.
Referring to an appeal by the chancellor of the university, Prof Noorus Saba Chughtai, for denationalization and return of educational buildings nationalized in 1972 to the Anjuman-i- Islamia, the governor assured him that any application for denationlization and handing-over of the adjoining ground to the Anjuman would be processed as expeditiously and favourably as possible.
Earlier, the vice-chancellor of the university, Dr Riaz Ahmad Hashmi, spoke in detail about the ongoing academic activities and research programmes at the university and added that the board of governors of the university recently had granted permission for the establishment of two more faculties — faculty of business administration and the commerce and faculty of pharmacy.
He said Jinnah University is a “non-profit” institution with a relatively low fee structure even lower than the self-financed programmes of public sector universities. The university, he added, imparted training to girls not only in traditional disciplines of social and natural sciences, but also offered them courses in modern career-oriented subjects, including computer science and information technology, pharmacy, microbiology, mass communication and business administration.
