KARACHI, March 30: Blue’s Night making every post a winning one, romped to her second win in a row, leaving the rest of the field in the far distance, at the Winter Gymkhana Meeting held on Sunday at the Karachi Racecourse.
Partnered once again by Kashif Ali, the grey thoroughbred mare was challenged by Great Bakht, Mera Jugnoo and Sweet Grandy, but turning for home, Blue’s Night strode away magnificently to cover the five furlong journey in a smart time of one minute 4 3/5 seconds.
Another impressive winner on the afternoon’s programme was Mohammad Qasim’s thoroughbred chestnut filly High Standard.
Brilliantly ridden by Ghulam Shabbir II, High Standard from trainer Cajetan Calaco’s yard, registered her second triumph on the trot beating another chestnut filly Jugni by two and half lengths going over six furlongs.
When the race began, High Standard took a flying start closely followed by Jugni. But approaching the bend Jugni took over the running and was the first filly to turn for home.
Soon both Jugni and High Standard were engaged in a keen tussle and half a furlong from the winning post, the latter forged ahead to win the race by two and half lengths.
Ghulam Shabbir went on to complete a fine double riding home Shah Mardan Shah II Pir Pagaro VII’s chestnut filly Lady’s Love to a fluent victory over her stable companion Love U Lady in the concluding event to complete a hat-trick of winners for her prominent race horse owner.
M. R. Hussain’s thoroughbred colt Show Time, chasing the first two runners throughout the race was third, with Captain Crash completing the frame.
The first race of the afternoon was won by outsider Ustadon Ka Ustad partnered by Ashraf Kamal, beating the favourite Rukhsar by five lengths. Neeli Naghahain and Royal Beauty finished third in a dead heat.
The chestnut seven-year-old horse Daru, to be had at handsome odds in the betting ring in the next race, registered his second triumph in succession, holding off the challenge put up by Splendid Winner.
Rahat’s Sultan 11-year-old grey horse Sachin piloted by veteran M. Mazhar, was a popular winner in the following race, collaring front runner Charismatic Eyes in the home stretch.
After the favourite Sardar was withdrawn from the fifth race and re-betting was introduced due to the pressure put on by the racing fans, not to mention the bookmakers, the connections decided to give their other runner in the race Hamza Saheb the nod, and the bay gelding with Nasim Ahmed in the saddle gratefully obliged, winning the race in a start to finish bid beating the new installed favourite Mah Sagar by two and half lengths.
The next race meeting is scheduled for Sunday, April 6.
