Democracy, The Conqueror to renew battle for supremacy

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, March 29: The two great four year olds, the Derby winner, bay filly Democracy and second placed bay colt, The Conqueror, are to measure each other’s strides again when they jostle for supremacy in the Eclipse Stakes Of Pakistan to be contested over 2000m at the Racecourse on Sunday.

Of the ten acceptors for the feature event of a card of seven drawn for the 25th Lahore Winter Meeting, both are outstanding performers during the on-going season.

Democracy had beaten The Conqueror by a neck in the Pakistan Derby run over 2400m on two weeks ago. There is no change in the handicap, Democracy carrying seven stones 11 pounds and The Conqueror eight stones.

The surface statistics and the Derby run would probably favour The Conqueror by the narrowest margin because he was leading until a couple of metres before finishing post when Democracy had rallied in the last burst of speed to win by a neck. Thus Democracy halted The Conqueror’s winning sequence who was undefeated at four starts. He should make amends this time.

Jet Master, Dizzy Height and Great Grandy should fight for the less remunerative berths. This will be the sixth race in racing order.

The first race will be held at 1.30 pm.
