Munir maintains three-stroke lead

LAHORE, March 29: Despite posting a card of three-under par 69 as compared to first day of five-under 67, Muhammad Munir (Islamabad/ PTCL)) with an aggregate of eight- under par 136 continued to lead on second day of the 5th Faysal Bank golf championship at the Lahore Gymkhana course on Saturday.

Munir gave improved performance on back nine which he completed without bogey at three-under par 32 with birdies at the 12th, 14th and 17th.

He could not gain any stroke after completing the first nine at par-37 with a birdie at the fifth and loss of stroke at the third.

However, the day’s score was posted by Imdad Hussain (Garrison) of four-under par 68 which pushed him into second spot with a two-day total of five-under par 139 (71+68). On first day, Imdad was joint fourth with Tahir Nasim, Abbas Ali and Manzoor Ahmed

Imdad had three birdies each and a bogey apiece on both the in  and out ways. He registered birdies at the fifth, sixth and the seventh but lost a stroke loss at the fourth. Coming back, Imdad earned three  more birdies at the 12th, 14th and the 16th while a bogey at the 10th.

Three strokes behind Imdad are Tahir Nasim (Lahore  Gymkhana), Muhammad Siddique (Faisalabad)  and  Mohammad Arif (Defence Club, Karachi) in third spot.

Tahir  who improved his position from the fourth to third showed consistency as entered another one-under par 71 for an aggregate of two-under par 142. Tahir could have produced  more impressive card had he not lost two strokes  while coming  back at the 13th and the 17th. Three birdies at second, seventh and the 12th had given him a perfect start.

Siddique posted a par-card of 72 to hold third position. He had  one  birdie at the 12th and a bogey at the third.  Arif  also carded a 72 with a birdie at the eight and lost stroke  at the 11th.

One stroke away at 143, two Gymkhana’s golfers  Akhtar  Ali and Abbas Ali were in fourth place.

Akhtar  who  was third on first day, finished the second round of one-over par 73 (36+34).  Abbas,  however, maintained his fourth position after getting a par-card 72. Abbas must have passed through some critical situation as five  birdies (third, eight, 16th, 17th, and the 18th and equal number of  bogeys (fifth, seventh, 11th, 12th and 13th.

Defending  champion,  Matloob Ahmed (Gymkhana) who  was  not among the top contenders on first day with a card of one-over-73, bettered moved into fifth with a card of one-under par 71 which made  his aggregate of 144. He is joined by three others, Ghani-ur-Rehman (Peshawar), Muhammad Iqbal (Gymkhana) and Shahid Masih (Gymkhana).

Unfancied Ghulam Hussain (Islamabad) who stunned every  one by  earning  the second spot on first day with a card  of  three- under-69 had a poor day with four-over par 76.

Shahid Javed (Garrison) retained his first position having another two-under par 70 to make it four-under par 140 in the amateur category. Shahid earned birdies at the fourth, seventh, 11th, 12th and 17th but bogeyed the third, 13th and the 15th.
