RAWALPINDI, March 29: The district government has decided in principle to appoint teachers close to their place of residence to facilitate them, District Nazim Raja Tariq Kiani said on Saturday.

Speaking to teachers and students during his visit to a government school, he said the district government planed to achieve the targets of 100 per cent literacy, elimination of shelterless schools, setting up of computer laboratories in high and secondary schools, providing facilities at public institutions and making non-functional schools functional within a year.

He said the district government had decided in principle to judge teachers’ performance on the basis of their pupils’ results.

Mr Kiani said disciplinary action would be started against teachers and other staff members of education department, consistently showing poor performance.

He directed the education department to identify those employees whose performance had been poor or who habitually remained absent. Action will be taken against such persons so that education standard can be improved.

“There is no place for those people who only get salaries and do not work. These people should be exposed and subjected to strict accountability so they cannot waste precious time of students,” the district Nazim said.

On the other hand, he added, hardworking teachers and other staff members would be fully rewarded for their work and diligence. “Teachers working with a missionary zeal will be encouraged,” he said.
