Wapda ends KRL’s hopes of appearing in final
LAHORE, March 28: A fine third wicket stand of 179 between Adil Nisar and Rizwan Malik and a four-wicket burst by pacer Kashif Raza enabled Wapda to enter the final of NBP One-day Cup cricket tournament, defeating fancied Khan Research Laboratories (KRL) by 168 runs at the Gaddafi Stadium under lights on Friday.
Set to score an imposing total of 299 to win, KRL were bowled out for 130 with 17 overs to spare. Only Saeed bin Nasir (50, six fours one six, off 59 balls) proved to be a major hurdle in Wapda’s way to victory.
Kashif’s fine bowling figures of four 34 in 10 overs included the prize wicket of Saeed. Leg-spinner Farooq Iqbal 2-21 and off-spinner Aqeel Ahmed 2-10 were the others who played a role in demolishing a strong KRL batting line.
Later, a decision by the two umpires without consulting the match-referee created confusion during the NBP Patron’s Cup Cricket Tournament day/night semifinal between Khan Research Laboratories and Wapda at the Gaddafi Stadium on Friday.
Umpires Aleem Dar and Rasheed Bhatti on the request of Wapda’s batsmen allowed the floodlights to be switched on when the 48th over of the Wapda’s innings had been bowled. But due to power failure, the lights could come on.
The umpires without consulting the referee Ihtesham-ul-Haq restricted the Wapda innings to 287-8 in 48 overs and also ordered for a roll of the wicket.
But after dinner, Wapda batsmen Zahid Umar and Kashif Raza again came out to play the remaining two overs after the referee’s decision.
Later talking to newsmen, Ihtesham said that he allowed Wapda to complete their quota of 50 overs because the match could be extended for one hour due to any interruption. And for that reason he took the decision.
Wapda without any loss added 11 runs in last two overs lifting the total to 298.
