Protesters divert irrigation water

By Our Correspondent

THATTA, March 28: Hundreds of protesters, accompanied by a Muttahida MPA, Heer Soho, on Friday forcibly released water in six distributaries of the Ganj Bahar Canal by raising regulator gates at the supply and control station located at Qadir Dino Shah.

Protesters, mostly local growers, were riding several vehicles and raising slogans against “usurpers” of water as well as the irrigation authorities.

The area peasants had been complaining about diverting of irrigation water to the Pinyari Canal, which irrigated the lands of two influential landlords.

The MPA verified the facts in this regard before shutting down the gates of the Pinyari Canal and diverting water to the six distributary canals, which had been lying dry for over a month.

Ms Heer, while talking to this correspondent, said that the growers — whose lands were irrigated by the Fateha Wah, Shah Wah, Garhi Wah, Chor Wah, Joya Wah, and Jafra Wah — had heaved a sigh of relief.
