HYDERABAD: District council criticizes DPSC’s performance

By Our Correspondent

HYDERABAD, March 28: The district council on Friday criticized the performance of the District Public Safety Commission.

Members of the district council blamed the chairman of the DPSC, Masood Pervez, and its non-elected members for inefficiency.

Nawab Rashid Ali Khan later adjourned the district council’s session till Monday, when it would continue the debate on DPSC.

The criticism on DPSC began when a resolution, tabled by Shafqat Soho, came up for discussion.

The resolution was, earlier, referred to the DPSC for an investigation into the complaints that the TPO, Hala, was harassing Ali Ahmed Khan Nizamani, father of Noor Mohammad Nizamani, the Nazim, Karam Khan Nizamani union council.

Mr Soho said that applications against the TPO had been submitted to the IGP, Sindh, district Nazim, DPSC and others.

The council officer, Abdul Waheed, informed the district council session that the matter had been referred to the DPSC and it had been asked to submit its report within a 15-day period.

The DPSC, in its reply, had said that the district council should be courteous while writing to the Commission as it was an autonomous body, Mr Waheed added.

He said that the Commission had also expressed its displeasure regarding the 15-day deadline given by the district council, adding that the complainant should be asked to appear before the DPSC enabling it to take necessary action.

Meanwhile, Abdul Qadeer Qazi, one of the members of the DPSC, while defending the Commission’s performance, said that it was the product of the Police Order 2002 and that the TPO, Hala, had been transferred because of the DPSC report.

Disagreeing with Mr Qadeer’s contention, Yousuf Qureshi and Rana Mehmood Ali said that the DPSC had come into being as a result of the Sindh Local Government Ordinance.

Meanwhile, the Naib district Nazim, Nawab Rashid Ali Khan, had taken serious notice of the letter written by the DPSC.

He was presiding over the council’s session on the fifth consecutive day.

Mr Khan also informed the district council that he had asked the EDO, education, to explain the publication of a tender notice worth Rs20 million, saying that the EDO would have to appear before the district council in this regard.
