Moin blasts majestic 174 as PIA reach semifinals

By Our Sports Reporter

KARACHI, March 25: Former Pakistan skipper Moin Khan sent another emphatic reminder to the national selectors when he smashed a brilliant 174 to power PIA into the semifinals of the NBP One-day Patron’s Cup at National Stadium on Tuesday.

The 31-year-old’s assault on a hapless Lahore Whites earned PIA a crushing 129-run victory in the one-sided quarterfinal.

PIA thus set up an intriguing semifinal clash against Allied Bank in a day-night match at the same venue on Friday.

After electing to bat first, PIA amassed a mammoth 327 for six in their quota of 50 overs. Lahore Whites, in reply, were restricted to 198 for four.

Moin, opening the innings, survived a chance when Adnan Usman Khan failed to grasp a catch off paceman Wahab Riaz when the PIA captain had scored just four. But thereafter, Moin batted like a man possessed as he blasted 17 fours and five sixes in his 152-ball knock.

It was an irony that Adnan Usman eventually ended Moin’s stupendous innings when he held a fine catch at deep mid-off to provide off-spinner Salman Qadir, son of leg-spin legend Abdul Qadir, a prized scalp.

Veteran opener Ghulam Ali shared a first-wicket stand of 77 with Moin before he was run out for a 36-ball 40. He struck eight boundaries.

Faisal Iqbal, named in the revamped Pakistan one-day squad, stroked four fours in contributing 66 off 73 deliveries. Together with his skipper, Faisal put on 152 for the third wicket.

Wahab and Salman claimed two wickets apiece while giving away 58 and 62 runs respectively.

The highlights in the Lahore Whites’ innings were the batting of Musharraf Ali and Tariq Rasheed. Musharraf, batting down the order from his customary opening slot, scored 55 off exactly 100 balls with the help of six fours.

Tariq was slightly more enterprising in making an unbeaten 66 off 97 deliveries. His knock included four hits to the ropes.

Young speedster Umar Gul bowled an impressive seven-over spell to capture the wickets of Muntazar Mehdi (4) and Adnan Usman (4).
