GUJRANWALA, March 25: A man was injured seriously when a wall of the dilapidated upper storey of the Government AD Model High School on Hafizabad Road here collapsed on Tuesday.

Mushtaq Ahmad, an employee of a book-seller, was taken to the local DHQ hospital in critical condition, according to Senior Headmaster Miraj Din.

Several motorcycles and cars parked outside the school were damaged in the incident. However, the headmaster termed it miraculous that teachers and students had remained unhurt.

Mr Miraj said that a former deputy commissioner, Suleman Sidiq, had declared the upper storey as “dangerous” some 25 years ago and ordered its reconstruction. However, nobody ever bothered to reconstruct it.

He said he had informed the district Nazim as well as the officials concerned in the building and education departments about the dilapidated condition of the building but to no avail.

He termed it fortunate that students taking their annual examination had left the building when the wall collapsed.

He urged the provincial minister for education to get the upper storey of the school reconstructed at the earliest so that loss of life could be avoided.

GEPCO KUTCHERY: Gujranwala Electric Power Company chief executive Brig Saif Ullah Khalid has appealed to consumers to deposit their outstanding dues in banks instead of making payments to Wapda officials.

He said that cable to cable connection would not be allowed at any cost, and vowed to take to task corrupt Wapda officials and power thieves.

He listened to consumers problems and issued directions to the concerned officers for their redressal.

The superintending engineers, executive engineers and sub-divisional officers were present on the occasion.
